| Editorial Reviews:
Amazon.co.uk Review Malorie Blackman is a fine, award-winning author whose work is always inclined to provoke debate amongst her readers, and indeed her peers. With Noughts and Crosses she surpasses expectation not only with her subject matter, but with the execution of a stimulating and provocative plot line that often leaves the reader chilled to the bone. Sephy and Callum have been best friends since childhood, and now they are older and they realise they want more from each other. But the harsh realities of lives lived in a segregated society are beginning to take their toll: Callum is a nought--a second-class citizen in a world dominated by the Crosses--and Sephy is a Cross, and the daughter of one of the most powerful men in the country. The barriers they would have to cross to be together at first seem little more than minor obstacles to the two idealistic teenagers, but soon those barriers threaten not only their friendship but their lives. Noughts and Crosses is written with the passion of an author who has a personal message about the perception of the past, present and future, and Blackman has used the clever device of turning preconceived ideas of racial prejudice upside down to make sure that her point is well and truly made. Deeply disturbing and totally absorbing this novel is intriguing from the outset, with a shocking climax that packs an unforgettable punch. (Age 11 and over) --Susan Harrison

One of the best books I've read this year December 31, 2008 noughts-and-crosses
Synopsis from Amazon:
Sephy is a Cross - a member of the dark-skinned ruling class. Callum is a Nought - a 'colourless' member of the underclass who were once slaves to the Crosses. The two have been friends since early childhood. But that's as far as it can go. Until the first steps are taken towards more social equality and a limited number of Noughts are allowed into Crosses schools...Against a background of prejudice and distrust, intensely highlighted by violent terrorist activity by Noughts unable to accept the injustices any longer, a romance builds between Sephy and Callum - a romance that is to lead both of them into terrible danger...
This is one of the best books I have read all year. Blackman writes about race and the trials faced in an unequal society. She writes magnificantly. The story follows Sephy, a black girl whose father holds a lot of power, and Callum, a white boy, 18 months older, whose family have no rights. The reader watches them grow up in this unfair, prejudice society where race is everything and the whites form a militant group, a terrorist group, in hopes to gain some equality. This is an incredibly tough subject to write about, and Blackman does it so well. In some ways it is a horror story, in others a sad tale. Noughts and Crosses has made me stop and think about why people turn to violence, how blessed we are that for the most part we live in a civilised, equal society and ultimately, what I would do in either of their positions.
I loved both characters, Sephy and Callum. I found myself willing them on, hoping for the best, despairing for them, grieving for them. I felt so many emotions during the book, and the ending, well I could cry.
I don't think I have a critism. Yes sometimes the storyline was a touch predictible, but did that spoil the story? No. Will I be reading the rest of the series? Yes. This is an amazing book, and it is has touched me in many ways.
10/10
As good as they say... definitely! December 28, 2008 I have read a lot of books and I have to say this could be the best one of them all.
For once in a love story it's not actually all about each other all the time. I find the balance Blackman's got between Callum and Sephy, and the society around them is perfect. So many key issues of now are made so real in this book is unimaginable, combined with the page turning interest created by Blackman it makes it an incredibly well written book, so I don't know what people are talking about it being boring. Of course it's sad, very sad sometimes and so unfair, but then... isn't that the reality of racism? I am 13 myself, which is supposedly the age group for this book and personally I think anyone can read this regardless of age.
Malorie Blackman truly has created something great here. A really fantastic read!!
Doom and Gloom December 15, 2008 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
Isn't the basis of any good book/film that 'good' prevails over 'Evil'. Not in this book.I really wanted to like this book but overall not enough good stuff happened, just doom and gloom all the way through. True, it was a page turner, but only because you sincerely want something good to happen. But no, not one light moment or scene to make you smile. Then a certain someones death at the end just destroyed it.
total disappointment December 13, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
To anybody who grew up under communism this book will be like just another piece of soviet propaganda - working class fighting for their rights, elementary, simplistic, infantile, predictable. Even Blackman sounds like soviet pseudonym alike Stalin, but in English. Horrible!
A must have book November 19, 2008 This is definetly one of the best books that i have ever read. i wasn't sure about reading it in the first place, as when i read the blurb, it seemed a bit wierd and i didn't really understand it.Also it seemed more like an adults book too me,but i am 15 and after the first chapter i really enjoyed it.
However, i hate a book with a sad ending, and this was without a doubt one of those books. It left me crying for ages after i'd read the last page, i just couldn't believe how it ended. I just kept thinking "no, it won't happen". (you'll see what i mean if you read the book). Im still debating over whether or not i should read the next one, because i really don't know how the stroy can continue. but i still say that this is an excellent book to read. but beware becuase it is a real tearjerker!
